Chapter 4: The Self and Interaction
Concept:
Generalized Other- The perspective and expectations of a network of others (or of society in general) that a child learns and then takes into account when shaping his or her own behavior. (Page 106).
Applying the Sociological Concept:
The concept that I chose (“Generalized Other”) can be applied to my superhero that I chose, which is Superman, in the following ways. Superman was the sole survivor of the planet Krypton. He was sent in a vessel by his father in an attempt to save his life right before Krypton exploded and killed everyone who inhabited it. The infant was discovered by Jonathan and Martha Kent on their farm in Kansas. They assumed he was human and decided to keep him and raise him as their own child. They named him Clark. Little Clark grew up in a loving home and considered himself to be a normal boy as he was not yet aware of his superpowers. Unfortunately, Clark was a victim of bullying during his youth. I think that the fact that Clark (Superman) grew up in a world where he had a loving family who taught his the difference between right and wrong as well as being bullied as a child can all tie in to the concept of Generalized Other. He learned from these experiences around him and that in turn is the reason that he stands up for good and is who he is and uses his powers for good.

Chapter 6: Deviance
Concept:
Innovators- Individuals who accept society’s approved goals but not society’s approved means to achieve them. (Page 157).
Applying the Sociological Concept:
The concept that I chose (“Innovators”) could be applied to my superhero that I chose, which is Superman, in the following ways: Superman was basically an orphan who came here from the planet Krypton. Right before the planet was destroyed, his father sent him (as an infant) to planet earth in a last minute attempt to save his life. Superman ended up lending in Kansas on a small farm and was taken in by a young couple and grew up with them. Young Superman was bullied as a child before he discovered his super-powers. He had strength like no other human being and had the physical ability to do WAY more than any human being could ever imagine. He could fly and had amazing strength. Superman eventually decided to use his powers for the greater good. Instead of fighting crime through approved means of the law (law enforcement, etc.), Superman takes things into his own hands and uses hissuperhero traits to fight crime. This was incredibly innovative and had not been done before.

Chapter 8: Race and Ethnicity as Lived Experience
Concept:
Situational Ethnicity- An ethnic identity that can be either displayed or concealed depending on its usefulness in a given situation. (Page 218).
Applying the Sociological Concept:
The concept that I chose (“Situational Ethnicity”) can be applied to my superhero that I chose, which is Superman, in the following ways: In this particular situation, I’m looking at Superman as being another ethnicity/race although he really is not a human being and comes from another planet by the name of Krypton. However, I still think that this concept can be applied. Since Superman grew up unaware of what he was or where he came from, once he did find out about himself, it came to him as a surprise. Because young Clark was different from everyone else, he would hide his powers and strength (unless he was provoked to the point to where he had to react). I think that that can be synonymous to deliberately asserting his ethnicity in some situations while downplaying it in other. Clark Kent would assess the situation in his mind and decide whether or not it favored revealing his “ethnicity” or not.

Chapter 10: The Macro-Micro Link in Social Institutions: Politics, Educations, and Religion.

Concept:

Power- The ability to impose one’s will onto others. (Page 281).

Applying the Sociological Concept:

The concept that I chose (“Power”) can be applied to my superhero that I chose, which is Superman, in the following ways: Personally, when I read the definition of power, I kind of assumed it was a negative type of power. The ability to impose ones will into others sounds like someone is making someone else do or think whatever it is that they want them to think. It’s a type of control. However, when applying this concept to Superman, I see it more as the fact that Superman has the power to make people do whatever he wants because he is physically strong enough to make them, but he doesn’t abuse his powers like this. Superman uses his powers for good purposes and people respect him and know that he is fighting for the good of mankind. Superman can use how power to help fight the bad guys in the world, but he also gains other types of power by having the support of the people. Superman is not a dictator or anything like that- his power is different in that sense, but he most definitely does have power- he just isn’t abusing it.
